Have you been following or taken part in the the Pattern Hackathon? It was back for another year, and I was excited to join in. The Hackathon kicked off on social media June 30th and has run for an entire month. The challenge closes today on July 31st so I raced out to get photos of my make. Only to realise I made it before the June 16th official start date and therefore doesn’t qualify. Oh well! Still happy to share it.
Here is my Butterick 6808, Simplicity 9605 and McCall’s 7948 mash up. I used the drawstring bodice of the Butterick adapted into a V neck (a simple fold back of the front edge). The sleeve frill of the Simplicity. Then drafted a second bigger frill that was the same inner curve but 2inches deeper in width. And added the McCall’s tiered skirt, hemmed a little shorter on the bottom panel. All three patterns have been used before but I haven’t blogged about my Simplicity top yet. See the Butterick! And see the McCall’s!
It’s great in hot weather and in dance class (I do Ballroom Dance). And I love drawstring waists for fitting ease and comfort. The ties are made from self-fabric to not distract from the design and I rolled hemmed the frills on my overlocker in coordinating thread so they also wouldn’t distract! That’s why I’m a little disappointed at how the white reverse of my fabric distracts me when it shows on the frills… not enough to stop wearing it of course. I also think the bottom frill could be more gathered.
The amazing sateen/satin/poly fabric is from Abakhan in one of their in-store remnant baskets. It’s opaque and substantial but has decent drape, meaning it didn’t need lining and also holds the shape of the frill sleeves pretty well. The print reminds me of Art Deco 1930s meets Orla Kiely; I see a broken floral motif, do you? I think satin was on sale that day so I only paid a few pounds for a couple of metres.
The view was looking spectacular on this summer’s day and my photographer quite enjoyed himself for a change!
Lots of different techniques hacked from various patterns, looks fab!
