Do you remember the puff sleeve drama of View C? It was worn for my Summer birthday last year and through Autumn thanks to it’s pretty navy print fabric. Well it was actually my SECOND version of the Butterick 6872 dress and today I’m sharing the first. Made for my 2022 holiday to San Diego! It’s a little tighter these days…
I made the full View A but again the pleats at the neckline have been folded out for a clean finish. This was something I did on my other version. Simply fold the pleats into place on the tissue pattern piece then sellotape them flat!
As I’ve mentioned before, it’s a fairly easy pattern to sew but getting a neat finish on the inner neckline corners where the frill/sleeve elastic meets the square neckline is a little challenging. The elasticated frills basically act as straps and are very comfortable to wear. The narrow hem around the ruffles keeps them lightweight and extra swishy.
This is the size 14 with a lovely fit thanks to the princess seam panels. I again wish I’d made it with a shirred back instead of the zipper for an easy to throw on style. That lovely square neckline and something about the skirt length make it feel extra fun.
My fabric was a surprising find as it’s pretty similar to a Liberty of London Tana Lawn print called “Cape Vista” but this is lightweight cotton, slightly thicker than lawn. I think it may be a sneaky knock off! So of course it sold out very quickly, because it’s beautiful so I’m really pleased I got some for this dress.
Lovely holiday vibe dress. I might have to steal this pattern!
Beautiful dress.
If you were to add shirring instead, would you just widen the back panel, do the shirring, and then sew up with the princess seams? How much width would you add?
This is an awesome idea!
Good question! So shirring is a roughly 2:1 affect so I’d remove the centre back seam allowance then double the back panel so it shrinks back down to the right size after shirring.
