Burda 6918

#SewFruity the fun Instagram sewing challenge is back for another year and I’ve taken part again!

This beautiful orange and lemon deadstock print cotton sateen was from Rainbow Fabrics and it’s from an Italian brand called Borgo De Nor. It’s got lemons and oranges and blossom all over it. The most fun happy blue colour.

I found on their website that they also had a pink colourway and they made an amazing square front tiered sundress so thought it would be great to recreate it but didn’t have enough fabric to add those gorgeous tiers.

Here’s a reminder of the challenge rules!

Yvette who happens to be running the SewFruity Challenge made a gorgeous dress with a big shoulder yolk and tiered layers from this same fabric. And I have a Simplicity pattern in my stash that’s near identical – S9780. So I did consider a bit of copycatting. Not because it would get me any extra points in the competition… just because I was so inspired by her lovely dress.

Instead I made the Burda 6918 bodice. It’s a sundress sewing pattern you might have seen in my recent YouTube videos. It’s got a cute square neckline with straps wide enough to cover your bra. Perfect for summer and looks like the original dress!

Then I decided to add a three-quarter circle skirt, good for swishing. Next I attached a huge ruffle to the hem. I made my ruffle 1.5 times the length of the skirt hem which was probably a bit too big, but I wanted something really girly and flirty. I’ve always used the By Hand London circle skirt calculator to draft skirts like this because they take the maths out of my hands – that means I can’t stuff it up!

The bodice is lined in the outer fabric. And I used a concealed zipper in the back. Definitely regretting not adding pockets!

The dress was made over the course of a day and I made a YouTube sewalong video showing my progress as the day wore on. I hope you’ll watch as I’m trying to reinvigorate my YouTube Channel after years of neglect.

The end result? It’s the perfect dancing dress so I’m looking forward to wearing it for Ballroom Dancing soon!
