Hello everyone! In case you missed it, I set myself a little task to keep pushing my style choices with new silhouettes every few makes to see if I find something I love. Spoiler alert: I’m not really sure it worked with this make.
The project has all the markings of things I like. A little bit retro and kitsch, a fun colour and some nice techniques to sink my teeth into. The sewing pattern is S9182 a multigarment design by Mimi G. I first saw it on Georgie’s feed in a beautiful pink colour.
I’m never making the skirt but the top appealed. I liked how the opened zip extended into the collar and I even liked the fabric Georgie used so I bought a different colourway from her shop HeySewSister! It’s a lovely waffle knit jersey which is chunky enough for a sweater without being difficult to sew.
I made the size 10 grading out at the hips and did a narrow shoulder adjustment.
Mimi G has a fab sewalong video on YouTube if you like extra support but the instructions are very clear and easy to follow. There aren’t many pieces so it’s just getting a neat finish that takes the time with this pattern. I installed my zip ever so slightly off to one side but it’s not enough to bother me. And I tacked my upper collar in place with hand basting stitches before edge stitching to secure it around the neckline.
You can see I left off the bands at the waist and hems… but I slightly regret not using the hem band. It gives it more of a retro sailor look but I also think it looks too big on me this way. Because on both views of the pattern the sleeves had cuffs, I needed to lengthen the pattern piece. I went a good three inches over my wrist so I could have a deep hem stitching line.
Normally I love mustard/ yellow/golden clothing but perhaps I’ve got the winter blues as this top isn’t giving me the jolt of fake sunshine I had hoped. It was fun to sew though, and gave me a chance to dive into my metal zipper stash which doesn’t get used often. I found a metal zip with a beautiful circle pull but it had tarnished slightly and was on a black tape so not suitable for this jumper.
So that’s the slightly sad story of this sweater. I don’t really reach for it when I’m getting ready on a morning… maybe in Spring I’ll want to show it off a little more?
If you loved Georgie’s jumper, check out Lucie’s over at Minerva. Or Mimi’s rust coloured one from the Sewalong Video is shown on her blog as still images.
Colour good. Just a bit shapeless, maybe needed that bottom hem band.
Can you go back and add the bottom band if you think you would enjoy it better.
