It’s the Marimekko fabric – finally sewn up! Those of you who follow me on social media will have seen me share this fabric before. I squealed with delight when it appeared on deadstock fabric shop Rainbow Fabrics two years ago. It’s a slight misprint as the colours aren’t fully saturated but I don’t remotely care. It was a bargain and I love it.
Its a slightly stiff cotton, lighter than a poplin but stiffer, like a poly-cotton so I panicked and procrastinated about what to make. I hate that such a beautiful fabric sat in my stash for so long but I’m sad to say it isn’t the only one that’s a victim to my indecision. In the end I thought the structure of the fabric would suit a collar and flared skirt so chose Butterick 6843 by Palmer Pletsch.
I’ve made this pattern twice before when it was in the McCall’s range and it cemented my love for it. There are lots of fitting tips in the instructions and guidance lines printed on the tissue for common adjustments. The collar is slightly oversized which gives it a retro feel to me.
“Flower Boob” was a dangerous possibility so I had to carefully place my 2 metres to make sure the front bodice looked nice and I’m really pleased with the placement. And has to be said… This is one of my all time favourite skirt patterns and I’ve used the pieces on other dresses. It floats open as you come down the stairs making me feel like a Disney princess.
To finish of the dress I cut out all the pink flower centres from my leftover scraps and made covered buttons that perfectly coordinate with the dress. Seemed a better idea than trying to find a matching/coordinating button in my stash or the shops.
I wore the dress to dance class and hope to see some more sunshine dress where it can be worn a lot more before I need to add a cardigan on top!
Absolutely fabulous! Loved the big print, colour and style of dress. One of my all time favourites.
