Simplicity 9462 & Vogue 2127

When I saw Vogue 2127 I thought it was beautiful. But I underestimated how much fabric I’d need for the blouse. so when it arrived I got excited to use my stunning Art Gallery Fabrics remnant which I’d bought from the Minerva.com warehouse sale. It’s called Madison Avenue Blaze on a rayon / viscose challis base. I can only find people selling the cotton base now as it’s quite old.

Vogue 2127 looks like a dress but is actually a two piece – skirt and blouse. I loved view B with it’s stand collar. Don’t you think pussy bows can be a bit fussy?

I only had 1.5m and there was no way I could cut out the original Vogue blouse from that. So I got creative. I used the Simplicity 9462 sleeves (made before here) and they fit perfectly onto the bodice, sleeve head gathered to fit. They’re not as full but give a similar shape and didn’t look out of place. I used the elastic cuff hem of the Simplicity pattern rather than adding the Vogue sleeve cuff onto the bottom. Makes dressing easier.

Everything was coming together perfectly. Then I tried to attach the collar. I’d sized the blouse down quite a bit (to a 10) as I didn’t want it too roomy but forgot to check whether the smaller collar would fit my neck… spoiler alert it didn’t. So I rallied and cut the S9462 collar from scraps I had left. This is an elasticated collar so I could make it fit absolutely fine, and in the end I think I like the ruffle more than the plain collar stand of the original.

With some head scratching, I found a way to add the ties to the neckline despite my pattern alterations so it feels like a happy hybrid of the two. I used jewellery cord from eBay in a coordinating shade of red plus some shiny red shank buttons from my stash. You gently melt the ends of the cord to stop it fraying, using a lighter at a slight distance – very satisfying!

Both Simplicity 9462 and Vogue 2127 feature rouleaux loop closures down the front which are fun to make and because the blouse slips on over the head you don’t have to unfasten them which is helpful if you find loops clumsy to button up. You could always add a few more buttons and loops if you find the neckline low. I’m going to wear a nude camisole underneath for warmth and coverage.

Best to say, Simplicity 9462 is technically out of print but there are a few copies still floating about. And yes yes, it’s also technically a dress but very easy to shorten into a top!
